i strike this as a funny thing. some white people i see on tv don't even look good when they do get their tan. they looked much better when they had fair skin. (no offense) but to me... dark, tanned skin and very light, blonde hair... together as one... sorry. it doesn't look attractive. as for my people here, i wish they stopped going to the store and buy a lot of skin-white products. i'm not saying that southeast asian people look bad in fair skin but... what is wrong with having a malay-coloured/coated or brown layer?

I think you're right. Natural is better. Some people just have bad taste. Their goal is to turn the world into a bland place where everyone looks the same.

It's unhealthy, too. Tanning puts you at risk for skin cancer. I don't know very much about those bleaching products, but it just seems like a bad idea to unnecessarily slather yourself with chemicals.

Its not wrong to want something different. They just get tired of the way they look and also feel they look better. If it makes them feel good then why not.

In this culture, having really pale skin is considered a sign of poor health . So basically people conform to what the cultural norms are. In order to look healthy and like everyone else, they tan.

I think it has to do with leisure time. Back in the old days when everyone here had to work outside a lot, there was always a big push to not let yourself get tanned (at least with the women). In the 1800s if you were fair-skinned, it meant your husband had enough money to pay outdoor laborers. Only poor women had to work outside. Now it's the opposite. If you stay fair during the summer, it means you have to work inside. The tanned women want to give the impression that they don't have to work. I think that's beginning to change though with the skin cancer threat. Personally, I'm happy with my skin tone. I'm rather fair, but I think I'd look silly if I was a lot darker than I am.

Well tanning does have a physical reaction to your body making it feel good. It is funny in the years this country started if you did have a tan it was looked down upon because people knew you were an outdoor laborer.

Whats wrong with just being you tanned or not tanned,natural ,all can look good. Much more important to be clean and well mannered. I do not try to tan but it happens while I garden anyways. Blond looks great with a tan but tans are just scarring of the skin layers. A tan is also natural its the bodies defense against ultra Violet light,but not laying around getting one. DO something constructive. People worry way way too much about looks as if we can take credit for what we inherit physically. To each their own I guess,
