Why are arabs always portrayed as brown?

I'm 100% arab and I definitely don't consider arabs to be part of the brown culture. "Brown" to me means south asian. Sure there are some dark skinned arabs, but so are some Italians, and the Spanish.. and they're not considered brown. Sure, I don't have blonde hair and blue eyes (But my cousins do, who are also 100% arabs), and I don't like any different than a "white" person, so why am i always classified as brown? Not that there is anything wrong with being brown. Quite the opposite in fact; brown people make the best samosas!

Wow, you want to be considered 'white' so much that you've made quite a rant about it.

So what if others consider you brown? Is it some illness to be brown? What is the big deal.

You are as caucasian as I am (I'm greek! =]). I'm not blonde either, just my avi is.

Dude there are blond everything. I read about a village in India where people are all blond and blue eyed. Here is an afghan schoolgirl. She could pass as British.

Arabs are all portrayed as brown cause a lot of westerners like to be portrayed as fair skinned. And blond and blue eyed.

EDIT: I'm a blond and blue eyed American;)

i hate the rude comments this is getting.

people like to portray arabs as brown because they don't know any better; they have never lived there and are not educated in the culture. a majority of arabs are "brown" so people just assume all arabs are. it's unintentional prejudice.

Why are arabs always portrayed as brown?

the only reason why arabs are sometimes clasified as white is because most arabs have caucazoid features. which are features that are found in most white ppl. there isnt anything wrong with being brown. at least you dont get sun burnt easly.

This is unfortunately a good example of the fact that we live in a world dominated by white supremacy.

White culture racializes "foreigners" as much as possible in order to protect the advantages of whiteness. For example, my girlfriend is from Turkey. In the UK, there are a lot of immigrant workers doing low-paid jobs, but not so in the US. This is why, in the UK, she is seen as "brown", but in the US, people consider her "white".

When my Jewish ancestors arrived in the US about 100 years ago, they were not considered to be "white", like I am now. That has changed. These things can always change, though it often involves one group advancing at the direct expense of someone else, I'm afraid. Jewish people became white in the US by moving to suburbs where blacks were not allowed, and by spearheading in the attack on Arabs in Palestine.

Basically, who's "white" and who's not at any given moment depends much more on the politics and economics of the society you are in then skin color itself.
